IGNITE SESSION: Making a Difference as a Maker Community

The Future is Now- Collin Thomas  - What is the future of Making? Us kids, that's what. I have grown up immersed in tearing things apart, learning how things work, and reassembling them in new and unusual ways. I have tools in my hands that no other generation has had. In school ALL kids learn to code. We have the power to make the world into whatever we want. We often start doing things before someone tells us that can't be done and often times we succeed just because of that. We are going to make the world a better place. Not only do we want to make a difference, we CAN make a difference.

Cultivating Empowerment through Making - Ashley West -This talk will explore the ways in which the academic makerspace at the University of Oklahoma has cultivated empowerment through making. Makerspace communities have the potential to be melting pots of ideas through focused programming that invites makers of all age, gender, ethnicity, socio-economic background & interest. After observing traffic patterns & engagement in the makerspace at the University of Oklahoma during the year of 2018, it became apparent that users felt that they needed to have a technical background to utilize the space, which was not intended. After strategic planning & a focused refresh of the space, we have seen a dramatic increase in students & community members using the space as a means of empowerment. This talk will explore the use-cases of individuals who feel that the technology made freely-available helped them become empowered to make change & inspire others who may not be aware that a makerspace can support learning & creativity across all disciplines.

Against the Clock, Across State Lines - Lon Davis- Jaxon is a small, 5-year-old boy, with a big heart. Learn about how 2 organizations from 2 different states, joined forces to make Jaxon's dream wheelchair costume, a reality.

Making a More Livable World: Makers for International Development - Robert Ryan-Silva- The DAI Maker Lab works with international development projects around the world to apply tools and approaches from the maker movement to the challenges faced by developing countries. With examples like flood early warning in Cambodia, improved water supply in Indonesia, and workforce development in El Salvador, Rob will introduce the Lab's work.

Of Makers and Placemaking
Panel attendees will learn about the confluence of events that ignited the Maker Movement in Chattanooga. The Power of the Network has a special meaning in Chattanooga. One of the city’s networks is physical, a 10-gigabit fiber-to-the-home Internet powerhouse known as the Gig. The other network is human and is powered by the Chattanooga Way, a network of collaborators who believe, simply, that working together works. Bringing the two networks together was an experiment in place-making.

Rural Reinvention
Rural Reinvention’ (working title), developed in conjunction with MakerSmiths and Lincoln Electric, is the story of how a rural community came together to turn a run-down, unused community asset into a makerspace that drives educational initiatives, economic development, smart government, community and improved quality of life for a diverse cross-section of the residents of a rural community in the midst of rapid change, struggling to hold onto their heritage and small-town feel.

This mini-documentary will be debuted at NomCon, followed by a ‘fireside chat’ with the principals involved to explore the following questions:

- Highlight the value and broad benefit of a community makerspace

- How can a maker space benefit a community, beyond just its’ members?

- What makes a maker, and why is ‘making’ becoming an increasingly relevant pursuit?

- How are maker spaces well suited to helps small town deal with some of their biggest challenges?

- What are the practical steps to establishing a maker space? How, practically, you pull together a maker space

- How can you gain corporate sponsorship/partnership and why are they attractive to brands?

Making an End to Extinction: A Conservation Toolkit for Makers
It’s been all across the news: over 1 million species are at risk of extinction in the coming decades. But while the media message has been doom-and-gloom, makers are uniquely positioned to have a monumental impact on the extinction crisis. In ""Making an End to Extinction: A Conservation Toolkit for Makers”, we’ll show you how your makerspace can join a network of makers building tech to halt extinctions. Camera traps to detect poachers, audio sensors to detect illegal logging, underwater drones to explore the deep ocean - all projects will tie into an existing conservation initiative, meaning anything you make, gets put directly to use in the field, protecting species. We’ll be providing free off-the-shelf class curricula, a list of DIY conservation tech projects, and a hackathon event playbook for you to run at your own makerspace - so you can earn class revenue and media coverage, attract and retain new members, and most importantly, inspire your maker community by taking part in the global movement to end the extinction crisis.

Making in College: Educational Pathways
Moderated by Micah Lande:
Degrees in college have previously been used to narrow profession options down for a student, like art, business, and engineering once you are labeled as your major and with further specializations in your degree, the list of jobs you are qualified to apply for are less than a dozen . Come listen to this panel speak about how they are changing the rules for higher ed by implementing making into their college experiences and opening the door wide open for all the opportunities students have after school. The goal of this session is to bring together a range of voices from college from former students turned into makers space organizers to deans that oversee a college that has a degree in making.

MakerNet
We will be presenting the vision of the MakerNet, showing the current state of the Alpha software, talking about the roadmap, gathering applications for the closed Beta, and talking about how MakerNet can become an income and jobs generator for Makerspaces, Makers, and communities.

How it works:  https://www.makernet.work/how-it-works
The big picture: https://www.makernet.work/the-big-picture

----

About MakerNet:  https://www.makernet.work/mission

The Maker Network is about helping Makers and Makerspaces thrive and evolve into an interconnected ecosystem of skills, tools, resources, and ideas. We want to see the maker movement flourish all over the world, and believe that the tools to do so look something like this.

Are you looking for the right tool for your project, and want to reserve it online? You can do that. Are you looking to keep track of all the tools and members in your space? You can do that too. Want to keep a record of your projects and share them with your social network? Got it. Want to find a brilliant maker to be your mentor? Now you can. You want to share what you know with your community? Check. Looking for collaborators with a certain skill set for a big project? Done.

We also get that every Makerspace is different, and there's no one-size-fits-all solution, so we're building this around an open API model, so that if you want to use the tools we're making differently, it's easy to do so and share that new functionality with the community. Makers aren't much for off-the-shelf solutions to problems, so instead we're trying to offer a robust and flexible set of tools for managing spaces, tracking projects, finding and reserving tools, and connecting with everything you need to make anything you can imagine.

IGNITE SESSION: Making Sustainable
Facilitated by Nan Braun

End Hype: Impact for Sustainability - Callye Keen -   -  After the immense effort of incubators, hack-a-thons, classes, and events, community organizations, such as makerspaces, struggle to create sustainability. Massaged metrics and false positivity skew perception and erode the community drive to build and improve programs resulting in impact. As the maker community, we do all these things signalling we care and want to change the world. Too often the results do not meet the spoken intention. I see this phenomenon in personal growth, startups companies, and charity organizations. The impact does not meet the hype. Customers get frustrated. Mentors distance themselves. Sponsors become disenchanted. The group collapses.
Changing the world requires brutal honesty with ourselves.

Maker Happen - Joel Leonard - Maker Happen Session is about importance of developing skills for current and future economic growth. I emphasize that Makerspaces need to transform from geek clubs to community resource centers.

Economics of The Maker Movement - Joe Dwyer - This talk will delve into the economics of The Maker Movement.
Some of the elements include: Why makerspaces often struggle financially (Rent, Dues, Employees/Volunteers, etc.) How makers earn a living and what motivates them to volunteer. Open source software and hardware in the educational context. Lessons we can learn from TechShop, Radioshack, Barnes and Noble, Make magazine, etc.

Grant Funding for Makerspaces - Elise Spontarelli - Grant funding sounds intimidating and maybe kind of boring. But money for makerspace tools, equipment, and projects is exciting! Grant writing is all about building connections and a network of support for your organization. This talk will teach how to decipher grant proposals, how much to ask for, and which grants are right for you.

The Empowering Nature of Public Art - Ryan McDermott - How quickly could you teach somebody to weld, build things out of wood, use a laser cutter, and program an arduino? I'll be presenting about "The Design Series" a curriculum I teach at The Walter Hive, a non-profit arts/education makerspace in Scottsdale Arizona, where students learn these skills on the first day of class. The students then use these skills to build interactive art installations, which they exhibit in our art galleries at the end of the week. Students, aged 14-16, seeing themselves go from never having considered building art before, to designing, building, and exhibiting creations, and doing this all in such a short amount of time, challenges their ideas about what they are capable of.

Makerspaces as Disaster Resilience and Response Centers (Workshop)
Climate-driven disasters are occurring harder and faster. Makerspaces can be ideal community resilience and response centers, with the right resources and training. This workshop is about giving your makerspace the resources to engage with your community effectively and to be prepared for anything.

Workshop Outline
  • What kinds of disasters is your community vulnerable to?
  • How can you improve the outcomes for your community when disaster strikes, through preparation, training, and making?
  • What are the things you need before, during, and after a disaster, and how can you make them yourself with open source plans?
  • How do you create a community of practice that will be effective in a disaster?

Learning Outcomes
  • A clear understanding of the types of challenges that arise in disaster response, and how those overlap with the types of challenges that can be addressed with a well organized makerspace
  • An outline for an actionable plan which is meant to be taken home and developed with active engagement of their local community
  • Some techniques and tools for effectively engaging their community in developing that plan, and other systems of practice that will increase resilience in the face of disasters
  • A collection of open source plans for example projects that address several of the challenges outlined above
  • Links to several relevant emergency skills training organizations which could conduct training at a makerspace.
  • A shared communication channel for all attendees to share methods, best practices, training schedules, and mutual aid.

IGNITE SESSION: Making Makers
Mentors in the Making  - Liz Whitewolf -  The Mentors in the Making program matches low-income high school students with STEM professionals on a 1:1 basis in a digital fabrication maker space. The pairs meet once a week at Fab Lab Carnegie Science Center and learn side by side the tools and technologies of the lab. Dinner is included, and the pairs’ relationship grows as they co-learn and share their experiences. STEM mentors help by guiding conversations about careers, school, and even help create a resume with their student, but they are not professionals in digital fabrication themselves. The unique aspect of this program is that the mentors are learning at the same pace as the students, and that is essential in empowering the students to become makers and inspiring them to be lifelong learners. The program lasts throughout the school year, and the pairs start with lessons taught by Fab Lab education facilitators. As their time progresses, the students and professionals begin to engage autonomously with the equipment in the lab and they work together using human centered design to create a prototype that solves a challenge in their school or community. By the end of the program, the pairs have a physical prototype of their solution and a celebration of their time together in the lab. The program began in the 2017-2018 school year with 10 students and mentors, all of which completed the entire program, with over 30 hours of 1:1 mentoring. Post survey results were conducted with help from The Mentoring Partnership, and 100% of participants agreed or strongly agreed with the statement, "Since I've participated in this program, I feel more connected to professionals in the STEM fields." This connection is an important aspect of the program; coupled with the desire to learn about new technologies, it creates a unique, positive learning environment for both students and mentors.

Factors Related to Opportunities for Collaboration in Maker Spaces  - Robert Fraher, Julie Peterson, PhD - This presentation describes a study conducted as part of ongoing research investigating the development of sense of community within maker space cultures. The study is a follow up to earlier research that identified factors involved in opportunities for collaboration in a maker space. These factors (skill, instruction, and emotion) were used to create a matrix that allowed this study’s participants (N =10) to reflect on their experiences working in a maker space and rate how significantly each affected their opportunities to collaborate with other participants. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the validity of these factors as axes for understanding the circumstances that lead to opportunities for collaboration. Participants in the study were students enrolled in an international study abroad program. The program course was a three-credit studio entitled Visual Language Design. The study was conducted during the week students were at AGA Lab, a print studio and research organization in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Central to the study was a project that offered students opportunities for both small and large group collaboration. Project-oriented opportunities for collaboration included library and field research, conceptual brainstorming, visual design, and production. Students also had opportunities to collaborate through a multitude of extracurricular activities such as scheduling, wayfinding, and event planning. This paper reports on key findings from the study, including correlations with earlier research regarding: 1) participants’ instructional activity (defined as occurring along three spectrums: providing or receiving, applied or conceptual, and detailed or general) and their sense of connectedness in the community, and 2) the importance given to one’s emotional connection to their creative practice. An additional insight from this study is the differentiation between the perceived influence of technical versus conceptual skills in determining opportunities for collaboration.

Leave the Mess: The Necessity of Chaos in a Maker's Space  - Bobby Reed -
Physical spaces for making generally have one of two outward appearances: messy chaos or sterile cleanliness. This experience has led me to the conclusion that "dirtier" makerspaces are far more approachable to the novice maker than clean makerspaces. This talk will outline and explore lessons learned for the different approaches to establishing an open, accessible, and less intimidating space.

The role of maker education in pre-service education - Michael DeGraff - The secondary STEM teacher preparation program at UT Austin, UTeach, was designed based on constructivist principles that are well aligned with making. However, the path for integrating making into UTeach has not been straight forward. In this talk we will discuss the how and why behind the creation of UTeach Maker, a vibrant maker-centered micro-credentialing program that is connecting the practices from K-12, university, and informal makerspaces to the experiences of pre-service teachers.

How Might We Start Making [STEAM] Cool in School?  - Danielle Martin - In the most under-resourced K-8 districts, makerspaces often become "safe havens" for students to flourish in STEM pursuits when they are challenged by math, science and engineering learning failure in other spaces. And in any formal K-12 education context, real student led making is often misjudged as non-academic "just fun" without any connections to standards and technical skills building. How might we start making to make science, technology, arts and math learning actually cool and inclusive to all students in all middle schools? Miss D will share her first year as a middle school makerspace elective teacher in East Palo Alto (CA), where her core lead makers typically are failing every other class but Makerspace elective, 80% free and reduced lunch and 40% homeless..and in the terrible pre-adolescent level of hell known as middle school. You'll hear all the mishaps and beautiful failures that also became opportunities to connect a little elective class to career technical education pathways or sneak in complex concepts like tessellation and design thinking with digital fabrication and student leadership. What may the secret? Just show up, make cool stuff with bits, vinyl, & lasers, then share the joy.

Traditional versus Maker Education  - Adam Spontarelli - This talk is a comparison between traditional education environments and those provided by makerspaces, particularly our experience at Vector Space. I hope to spark conversation about what features we should look for and what outcomes we should expect from quality education. Topics covered include intergenerational learning, workloads, goal setting, individualized curriculum, exercises vs problems, and culture.

Who is a Maker? Equity & Making
Moderated by Dr. Ron Williams - The term Maker can evoke feelings of belonging or feelings of being an outsider. What makes a “maker”?  Who belongs? Who doesn’t? The ethos of the maker movement is to create more equitable outcomes in life for humans by creating spaces where we can all imagine a different future and create it. But not everyone feels as though they are a part of this movement. How might we change that? The goal of this session would be to facilitate and engage a dialogue around equity and how it does, or doesn’t, show up in our spaces, and what we can do to work towards equity.

IGNITE SESSION: Making Networks
Facilitated by Josh Weisgrau.

Making MakerSpace websites better: an Open Source Drupal profile for a better community.  - Lee Walker - The Makerspace website is almost always thrown together then ignored. Becomes out of date, or hacked, and increasingly irrelevant.  It should be a resource for members, and a way to drive new members to join, and get donations. I'm building a Drupal based distribution based off OpenSocial https://www.getopensocial.com (Used by Greenpeace etc) to cater to Makerspaces, called OpenMaker.
It's 100% open source, so you can download it and install it on your own server, or I'll be offering a Software as a Service, where I'll do that for a low monthly cost (about $30-$50 I'm expecting). That way I'll handle updates, security, backups etc. As the president of our Makerspace, I found it hard to keep up with what anyone was doing in the space. Communication between members was hard, and relied on email. The cool things people were doing went unnoticed. The site allows users to log in quickly (without having to type usernames/passwords after the first time) and post pictures/words of what they have been up to from their phone, tablet or desktop. We then have a stream of updates. These updates can be cross posted to social media easily, but we own our own content then, instead of only using Facebook and posts going into the social media pool where you may or may not see them based on their display algorithms.
I have some development help already, we are using it on www.chattlab.org and its continually being improved. The site includes a stream of making posts, events, topics, groups, landing pages Call-To-Action etc. I'm interested in any help, and any ideas for what to build next. I'll also happily take sponsorship to build this. Again 100% open source, anyone can use it for their Makerspace.

Empowering Pre-Service Teachers for the Innovative Maker Classroom - Stefanie Nguyen - Learn how two universities in Austin, Texas collaborate to set up pre-service teachers for success in the classroom through Maker Weekend Workshops. Students from the University of Texas and St. Edward’s University attend monthly hands-on professional development opportunities where they learn maker skills, take home new technology, and classroom ideas. Pre-service teachers are mentored by peers, experienced teachers, and makers to help tie maker skills to curriculum. They even have opportunities to receive grant funding for maker projects in their classroom.

Maker Mashups: Managing Multidisciplinary Projects- J. E. Johnson - This talk will review the courses taught at The University of Texas at Austin where engineering, studio art, theater, film, and computer science students come together to build ambitious special effects, costumes, and interactive animatronics in the studios of Texas Applied Arts. How do you quickly build a team of students who have spent several semesters developing contrasting (and sometimes incompatible) professional practices and work habits? Specific methods for both persuading art students to discover their technical abilities and granting engineering students permission to embrace their artistic side will be discussed. The talk will feature inspiring stories of success and divulge cautionary tales of epic failure. This project-driven, multidisciplinary pedagogy has already shown positive influence on student career readiness and may also suggest a path for universities to maintain their value and relevance into the 21st century.

Makerspaces and Data - Jennifer Deafenbaugh - What Can you do with the NOM Survey of Makerspaces Annual Report  A small group of really dedicated makers helped put together and launch the 2018 Nation of Makers Annual Report. The results are in, and we're encouraging you to take our findings and use them to help learn about other makerspaces and to advocate for makerspaces in your community and beyond. This talk will focus on things you can do right now with the results of the survey.

Fulton Around - Brady Fulton -We could have kept doing what we were doing everyday for the rest of our lives, but we didn't. We sold our house, I quit my job, we pulled the kids out of school and bought a van. Now we're on a year long adventure to learn about the people and places that make up our great country. We are Fulton Around.

Next Gen Role Models: Using Social Media to Engage Girls
There’s a reason Bill Nye is a millennial icon (and meme) regarding all things science. But who will the next person be? Will she be a woman? Maybe there will be hundreds of them. We can push names like Marie Curie and Grace Hopper all we want, but they’re not relatable to kids. The role models of this generation are the YouTubers, Instagram influencers, and social media stars who are pushing Making in a positive way. Join Xyla, the host of the YouTube Channel Beauty and the Bolt, and learn how to find (or become) modern, engaging, and relatable role models for your students (plus how to implement existing YouTube content into your classroom or makerspace!).

Makerspaces in Libraries - Lessons learned and connections to be made
This panel will share the experiences of these esteemed librarians who have pioneered launching their makerspace/library hybrid into different settings of academia and public libraries. Comparing results on what the outcome was when they integrated tools, technology, and makers into a library setting. This panel will discuss best practices of "making" in a library, how to best transition a new library into a maker space. Each speaker will have a chance to highlight the ways that they made impact and how they have connected to makers within their local communities and campuses, and how to connect with them in order to share the curriculum that they offer.
